Old World Community Values for the Modern Era
Back in 2011, the City of Yarra Council owned a derelict property on a corner block in a popular area. The land had previously been home to the Burnley Neighbourhood House. The council planned to sell the block to developers.
The community objected and pushed back. As a result, the council opened the site to expressions of interest. Four years later, Burnley Backyard emerged — a new concept for community living and a clear victory for local values. The official opening took place on Sunday, 21 June.
A Community Partnership That Stood the Test of Time
The Richmond Community Learning Centre and the Richmond Community Garden Group partnered with the City of Yarra to bring the project to life. With strong community support, they overcame setbacks and delays. Their shared commitment turned the once-derelict space into a vibrant community resource.
A Space for Everyone
Burnley Backyard gives residents the chance to hire both indoor and outdoor spaces. The site includes a kitchen garden, barbecue area, and even backyard chooks.
During the week, Richmond Community Learning Centre will offer programs that bring people together. Those with artistic passions can explore their creativity in the arts studio. A community workshop will give locals a place to fix and build things. Meanwhile, anyone with a green thumb can rent a plot in the garden. There’s something for everyone.

The Community Entrepreneur
The Richmond Community Learning Centre, formerly the Burnley Neighbourhood House, continues to run children’s programs from its Lord Street premises. It also co-manages the new Community Hub at the Lend Lease Development on the old GTV 9 site in Bendigo Street.
